ACL Injury Overview

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the major ligaments in the knee that helps provide stability during movement. ACL injuries are common among athletes who participate in sports that involve sudden stops, quick changes in direction, jumping, and landing.

An ACL injury can occur when the ligament is stretched or torn due to excessive force on the knee. Common symptoms include a popping sensation at the time of injury, swelling, pain, instability, and difficulty walking. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are important to prevent further damage to the knee.

Treatment depends on the severity of the injury and the individual’s activity level. Mild injuries may improve with rest, physical therapy, and rehabilitation exercises, while complete tears often require surgical reconstruction followed by a structured recovery program.

Prevention plays a key role in reducing ACL injuries. Strength training, balance exercises, proper landing techniques, and sport-specific conditioning can help improve knee stability and lower injury risk.

With appropriate treatment and rehabilitation, many individuals can successfully return to their daily activities and sports while maintaining long-term knee health.
